I want to thank Dr. Nancy Kay for bringing Kind Hearts In Action into her “Speaking for Spot Gives Back” program. Under this program, Kind Hearts In Action can receive $4 for every copy of her book “Speaking for Spot” that is purchased by supporters of our nonprofit foundation. All you have to do is pick Kind Hearts In Action on the pulldown menu on the page when you buy the book.
This is the kind of fundraising opportunity that really dovetails into what Kind Hearts In Action is all about. Dr. Kay helps bridge the gap in communication that often opens up between dog owners and vets. In her clear, simple style she explains medical issues for owners and lets them know the questions they need to be asking and why. She lays out a road map to guide you through the decisions that must be made and writes with the common theme that “You and only you should be the advocate for your dog.”
You will find guidance on just about any issue from how to pick a healthy puppy, vaccinations, treatment of cancer and other diseases all the way to how to make the choice about euthanization. She writes with authority and experience, but she also writes with heart. The stories in her book will make you laugh and cry.
One line had a lot of resonance for me: “It typically takes no more than four minutes and 23 seconds for the average person to fall hopelessly in love with a dog.” That is what so often brings people to Kind Hearts In Action.
Our main battle is with canine distemper. One of the major problems is that so often families will adopt a young puppy out of a shelter and find out too late — after they’ve fallen in love and brought it home — that the pup has canine distemper. Usually it is days later that such families will write me, desperate for a way to save their dog from a disease that is usually fatal.
We believe there is a way to save these dogs through the NDV treatments discovered by Dr. Al Sears, but so far Dr. Sears treatments have not been published in a veterinary journal or other publication. We are getting closer to that day, but I should point out that naturally you won’t find Dr. Sears’ treatments in Dr. Kay’s book.
Our inclusion in the “Speaking for Spot Gives Back” program should not be taken to mean that Dr. Kay endorses Dr. Sears’ theories. But her support of Kind Hearts In Action helps keep us going and gives us a chance to one day prove the validity of those theories.
So, thank you, Dr. Kay.
